The 'Lost Art' of Silence
If you are fortunate enough to live by the sea and give yourself twenty minutes to sit watching and listening to the waves you may find yourself relaxing. This is because waves are so complex and unpredictable in their patterns that our brains quickly give up trying to impose order on them and we let go of our need to control.
For those of us who cannot make it to the beach every day we invite you to ‘take your time’ and consider some ‘waves’ - a series of prompts and reflections that we have found helpful when structuring time and reflection with people on our executive retreats.
Why not set aside a minimum 30 minutes a month for your own 'silence’. A silence that can become a refreshing interlude in a busy life. Every month there will be a new reflection for you to use and think about.
Presenting ourselves with a short space in our busy lives is not easy. Many things rush in to fill the vacuum. Even if we do manage to sit still, our heads quickly fill with thoughts about what we ‘should be doing’. Yet if you do not set aside some special time for yourself, the temptation will be to fill this time with busyness.
Click on "Thought for the month" to read our irregular 'waves'. Use this as a spur to take 30 minutes in silence - either purposeful reflection on something significant for you, or simply a quiet meditation to empty your head of 'noise' and enjoy the peace of being.
Believe it or not, this can transform your leadership clarity and impact.
